An affordable housing project for Santa Fe Youth Shelters in Santa Fe, New Mexico
For over twenty years Santa Fe Youth Shelters and Family Services has served at-risk and run-away youth by offering emergency shelter, social services, life skills counseling, and transitional housing. This facility provides youth with transitional accommodations between the shelter and market housing. The project consists of five two-bedroom units, a community room and laundry facility organized in a sawtooth plan to maximize individual enclosed outdoor spaces and to minimize views from one unit to another. In addition to private funds, the project was funded through a variety of grants, including HUD and the state of NM.
Scott Moore y Medina and K+CA provided project management. The project required a longer planning period due to the complexities of the overlapping zoning and historic zones affecting the project site which had aspects of jurisdiction of both Santa Fe County and the City of Santa Fe. This necessitated an extensive code review process and multiple appearances before the County Commission and the City’s Design Review entity, ultimately resulting in a special designation for the project due to its unique service to the at-risk youth and families of the region. The project management role thus required not only a solid understanding of zoning, code and government processes, but also the ability to translate it all into the design and layout of the project in a manner that still met the Owner’s desired programmatic needs.
