This project serves the Oglala Sioux (Lakota) Housing program in its efforts to provide shelter for its veteran population on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
The scope of work includes the design and engineering of four, 4-plex units and all associated site and utility design work. Each 4-plex contained 4 apartments each approximately 1,200 sf in size. The apartments were sized for efficiency and cost in order to maximize the number of units per the project budget. Major concerns for the Owner on this project included accessibility, energy efficiency, cultural relevance and cost controls.
Features include covered porches framed and detailed in cedar, ADA and universal design planning, highly efficient wall materials, insulated crawlspaces, high-efficiency HVAC, metal roofs, and naturally vented attic space. Each apartment also has the opportunity to store exterior possessions in a centralized, secured storage shed located in the middle of each 4-plex unit. The project is being designed to meet Energy Star criteria for testing and is expected to meet and/or exceed those standards and be certified as such through a third-party rater program.
Additionally, supportive services for the tribal veterans will be integrated into this grouping of buildings, including V/A benefits, gatherings, etc.
